OPENING CREDITS: Recessional by Vienna Teng
And the words, they're everything and nothing;
I want to search for her in the offhand remarks:
Who are you, taking coffee no sugar?
Who are you, echoing street signs?
Who are you, the stranger in the shell of a lover,
Dark curtains drawn by the passage of time?
Oh, words like rain, how sweet the sound.
The credits roll across the screen as the song plays. The song is quiet and introspective, uncannily like the girl the movie is about.
WAKING UP: Fairytale by Enya
[instrumental]
As a song that mimics a music box plays, the camera pans across a small blue bedroom. It comes to a rest on a teenaged girl, still asleep in her bed.
The alarm rings, and the girl opens a bleary eye. "Godsdamnit," she grumbles as she clambers out of bed.
FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL/WORK: Are You Alive? by Richard Gibbs
[instrumental]
The opening theme to the Battlestar Galactica miniseries plays as the girl strides into school, somewhat ready to tackle another year.
FALLING IN LOVE: So Obvious by Runner Runner
I need you here, but you're always so far away
I call you up, but you know it's just never the same
'Cause being closer to you is my sweetest escape
It's all I needed
I need you here, but you're always so far away
"Hey Lily!" a friendly voice calls. "Long time no see!"
Lily turns to see a tall, gangly boy leaning casually against his locker. "Keith!" she exclaims as she walks towards him. "I didn't expect to see you here!"
They embrace, and Lily closes her eyes with a little sigh. "You're a senior, hm?" she asks, her eyes still closed.
"And you're a sophmore," he adds. They break apart. "Missed you."
"Me, too." Lily cracks a smile at her reply. "I better go. See ya."
FIRST TIME: Take Me Anywhere by Tegan and Sara
Still, cause I don't want to move a thing
And that you fit right into me
And all the things I don't want, they're full
Of love and longing
Take me by the hand and tell me
You would take me anywhere
"This is a really bad idea, Keith," Lily whispers as he kisses her neck.
"You're still listening to your seventh grade science teacher, huh?" he whispers, his breath hot against her skin.
Lily pushes him off of her and glares at him. "I might, but I also don't want to get knocked up."
Keith looks at her reproachfully. "I thought you wanted this," he said quietly.
"I didn't want it to go this far," Lily sighs, getting up.
FIGHT SONG: What About Now by Daughtry
Shadows fill an empty heart
As love is fading,
From all the things that we are
But are not saying.
Can we see beyond the stars
And make it to the dawn?
"You didn't want it to go that far, but you have no qualms about kissing me in my own bedroom!" Keith is fuming. Lily is sitting at his desk, her legs crossed and a cold expression on her face.
"I thought I trusted you enough to know when to stop," she replies quietly.
BREAKING UP: Battlestar Sonatica by Bear McCreary
[instrumental]
"I'm leaving," Lily says after a while. "Bye. I'll see you at school."
Keith looks like his world had fallen away underneath him. "Lily," he whispers in a strangled voice.
Her glare is icy. "I guess I trust people too much," she growls as she grabs her backpack and leaves.
PROM: The Swan by Camille Saint-Saens
[instrumental]
Some high schools have no idea what people liked to dance to on prom night, Keith thinks as he watches the school's resident music geeks dance across the floor. They are the only ones.
Leaning his head against the wall, Keith suddenly wishes he actually had a date. But the one girl that he would have asked at the first opportunity was mad at him for not knowing when to draw the line.
But then again, if he had asked her out, she probably would have made him dance to that song.
LIFE: Nothing Hurts Like Love by Daniel Bedingfield
Nothing hurts like love
Nothing brings your heart so much pain
And you'll never learn
Till you get burned
Till you're burned by the flame
Nothing hurts so bad
Nothing hurts so much
No, nothing hurts like love
"Frak!" Lily growls as she realizes just where her train of thought had strayed to.
Quickly looking around, she ducks her head down and immerses herself in science again. "Why do I think about him so frakking much?" she wonders to herself. "I'm supposed to be mad at him."
Life's a bitch and then you die, she muses.
MENTAL BREAKDOWN: Time of Your Life by Green Day
It's something unpredictable
but in the end it's right.
I hope you had the time of your life.
Lily screams as she rips another sheet of paper into smithereens. "Why? Why?"
DRIVING: Stand in the Rain by Superchick
So stand in the rain
Stand your ground
Stand up when it's all crashing down
You stand through the pain
You won't drown
And one day what's lost can be found
You stand in the rain
It's night and it's raining.
Lily sits behind the wheel, not knowing where she's going but knowing she's at least going somewhere.
The engine suddenly dies on her. "Frak!" Lily curses. Luckily for her, there were houses nearby, which meant help if she could find the guts to get out of her car.
To her surprise, she suddenly notices a familiar car sitting in the driveway of an unfamiliar house. "Mrs. F!" she whispers quietly. "It'd be rude of me to make a house call, but I'd love some moral support."
She sits in her car, still debating over the pros and cons of knocking at her seventh grade science teacher's door. Overhead, the rain pours on.
FLASHBACK: The Storm and the Dead by Richard Gibbs
[instrumental]
Closing her eyes, Lily remembers Mrs. F. She had short, wavy red hair and a friendly smile. A visit to her classroom meant that a happy Lily walked out the door at the end.
Lily clambers out of her car and staggers up the walkway to the door, ringing the doorbell.
Mrs. F opens the door. "Lily!" she exclaims. "How did you know where to find me?"
"I didn't. My car died on me and I just knocked on the first door."
"You know that's very unsafe," the science teacher chided. "Well, I can't leave you out here. Come on in."
GETTING BACK TOGETHER: Move Along by the All-American Rejects
So a day when you've lost yourself completely
Could be a night when your life ends
Such a heart that will lead you to deceiving
All the pain held in your...
Hands are shaking cold
Your hands are mine to hold
"So you left him?" Mrs. F exclaims. Lily nods.
She's sitting in a comfortable armchair, a towel draped across her shoulders. "I told him I couldn't go that far."
Mrs. F smiles. "You listened."
"I always do."
They laugh. Finally, Mrs. F calms down. "I think he's a pretty decent fellow, if I do say so myself. Maybe after a few more years, you can get back with him and, oh, I don't know… get married? You must invite me to the wedding."
Lily shrugs. "I'll keep you updated."
WEDDING: Wind Beneath My Wings by Bette Midler
It might have appeared to go unnoticed,
but I've got it all here in my heart.
I want you to know I know the truth, of course I know it.
I would be nothing without you.
Things had worked out even better than Lily had expected. Before she knew it, she was out of high school, out of college with a master's degree in biology, and had met Mary McDonnell at a science fiction convention.
Now she was getting married.
Keith had been a high school sweetheart, and he would always be like that, she thinks as she says her vows. Out of the corner of her eyes, she sees Mrs. F in the first row, smiling through her tears.
Caitlyn, the maid of honor, smiles reassuringly as well.
Keith, as the best man, looks at her with heartbreak in his eyes.
BIRTH OF A CHILD: Antebellum by Vienna Teng
In the fall,
We circle through the leaves
And talk about the little ones.
And we smile, but never say too much.
The moment always vanishing.
Her husband looks at her with awed eyes. In his arms he cradles their first daughter.
"Her name is Laura," Lily whispers fondly.
The doors open, and in comes Mrs. F and Caitlyn. "Did I hear you're naming her Lori?" Mrs. F wonders aloud.
Lily laughs. "No, her name's Laura. But you can call her Lori if you want."
FINAL BATTLE: Heeding the Call by Bear McCreary
[instrumental]
"Lily," Keith whispers, his eyes darkened with desire.
"Keith, no," she gasps. "You know this can't ever happen."
"He won't know a thing," he promises. "I didn't climb in through the window for nothing."
Lily blinks. Her eyes then narrow. "You've lost your second chance. I thought we could be friends, but you never cease to amaze me in the bad way. Get out."
After she pushes him out the window, she slams it shut and bolts it for good measure.
DEATH SCENE: Watermark by Enya
[instrumental]
"Mom," Laura murmurs sadly as she strokes Lily's hand.
"Laura. Where is your brother?"
"Here," Bill replies, his smile forced.
Lily smiles back. "Send my love to Keith. Tell him I won't forget him." Her eyes close.
Laura and Bill look at their mother. "Who's Keith?" Laura finally asks, but Lily doesn't respond.
FUNERAL SONG: Say Uncle by Vienna Teng
I close my eyes and hope they do not fade
These remnants of a voice and a smile
Images of landscape, cloaked in forest green
Like your life unfolding mile by mile
Keith came to the funeral.
Walking up to the casket, he presses a kiss to its hardwood surface.
"Goodbye, Lily," he whispers.
END CREDITS: You Found Me by The Fray
But in the end everyone ends up alone
Losing her, the only one who's ever known
Who I am, who I'm not and who I wanna be
No way to know how long she will be next to me
The end credits roll across the screen.
The real Lily laughs as she looks at who played Mrs. F.
"Mary McDonnell," the real Mrs. F says appreciatively in her seat next to her. "That is just frakking brilliant."
"I know," Lily replies. "Now everyone will remember you as someone she played."
